sG and becky's posts today remind me of an idea I had been cultivating. I was just thinking the other day about how everyone has such different musical tastes (and this is borne out in that worst CD thread, certainly). I've discovered a lot of interesting and cool things from the music that others have suggested. I resurrected a memory of the mefiswap (where metafilter members trade mix CDs with each other) and wondered if we couldn't also do that here? Call it AEthermix. The idea: you make a CD and distribute it to others, and you get a CD from everyone else in return. Maybe you'd like to show people what cool new (or old!) stuff they've never heard of. Maybe you'd like to spend that 75 minutes playing OMD's "How Bizarre" and Supertramp's "The Logical Song" over and over until the disc ends. Does this capture anyone else's interest? (the overall idea, not the description of that last disc)
more reasoned persuasion in the comments.
A while back I was working on a video game music cd. I was inpsired by the great music in Madden, Grand Theft Auto (especially III and Vice City), and Jet Set Radio Future. I downloaded most of the music but never got around to burning the cd. Now I have a reason!! I'm in.
Ween? . . . CHECK!
I also meant to stress that I'm not demanding certain styles from anyone despite having associated many of you with one above. Pick anything you like anywhere from the best of one artist to songs on a particular theme (or word?) to a completely random mix. I'm not trying to force leroy to produce an all Ween CD, but if that's his poison...
I want to play.
I'm in, although I'll warn you that I'm a connoisseur of bad 80's as can be backed up by leroy. They may have temporarily gone silent, but Hall and Oates shall rock on forever!
oh man. You're all in for a real treat here. I bet mine will be the most (un)popular. All the 80's, country, and teeny bopper music you can imagine.... soooo great. Or maybe a CD of all Mr Big...
What will be real sad is that will will really be some of my favorites...
That's Radtastic Certified™!! I'm in!!! Ya'll have your 4track reel-to-reel decks warmed up, right?
Ha ha. Just kidding. I slay ALF with a spoon.
But seriously, folks, I'll need some expert technical assistance to:
1) Burn single CD tracks onto CD-R
2) Convert LPs into tracks on the computer that can then be burned onto CD-R for play in any CD player.
In case some of you early-adopters have forgotten what that is, it looks like this. If that makes you drool as much as it does me, you'll be emotionally crushed (Crushed!) to find out that it's not available anymore... but there is one better!
Uh, I like Mr. Big....
Did I mention that this all needs to happen in Lee-Nooks, too?
Huh huh. You bought Nad. And not even the hair removal formula.
Lee nooks? Is that a new baby teething tool?
uh. . . my 4 track reel to reel deck is warmed up! how else am i supposed to archive my LP's?
Pablo and I are amassing an army right now and we will totally kick your ass with our nuclear-powered trebuchet.
Just letting everyone know that I would love to get in on this. I must warn you all that I like country music. Not bluegrass, but the kind they play on KVET and KASE. If anyone would like my not to participate because of this, I will refrain from subjecting you all to what ned feels is the worst music ever.
If it were windows, all you need to do is to rip the song to a .wav file and any CD burning program will be able to line those up onto a CD-R. As for analog, you need a sound card with a mini-jack input, an RCA to stereo mini jack converter (I got mine at radio shack), and Audacity to record your line in.
Except that your Nads doesn't have RCA outputs and you're using Linux.
Things you can do? Some can't be done.
Hey Nate!
the first stop on Die Toten Hosen's winter tour is in Bayreuth, where there is less to do than in a small town in texas. So I would be happy to go, record it surreptiously, and upload it for you, if you think they are worth the trouble.
I am almost finished making the CD. I will post the names of the tracks later today / tomorrow.
Now I just need to know how many copies I am making.
I'll try to make some sort of webpage tonight or Thursday that counts up participants and gives any other relevant information. I wouldn't expect most people to be ready for distribution until a month from now...say October 25th? That gives javelina enough time to outfit his rig and everyone else who doesn't have all of their music already on their hard drive *cough ziggy* time to rip and burn.
jenn: as for die toten hosen, I think you should catch that live performance and mix it into a CD with the other highlights of German music
You can count me in!
I'm in it to win it!
but gotta digitize all this analogue data lining my shelves, unfortunately at the cost of lower fidelity.
Pablo and javelina know that spinnin' your LPs is like the lotto (second from bottom).
I wanna do it but I don't want any country music shit. Even christian rock has the redeeming value that you can laugh at it.
Oh, that reminds me. There's a christian music ripoff artist for emenem that I accedently came across the other day in the weight room. I wish I had the tenacity to hear the song out and find out his name, you would've loved it.
The above is an explicit example of what I did not wish to happen as a result of this. As punishment, I would like everybody to make a special CD for PJ consisting solely of "I've got friends in low places" (or a suitable replacement) on repeat.
OK, I'm in. All of you early birds will have to burn one more copy

I've often thought, "Man, I'd like to know at least a little about X, but I sure don't want to spend the time looking into it myself." I want to know more about bluegrass, bassoons on fire, and Ween. I want to hear the next Sigur Ros or Postal Service that someone else already knows all about. I want to remember the best of Grand Funk Railroad and lost British garage rock. I challenge flip and ziggy to produce the best from the mountains of material they've passed along to me over the years.
If a massive mix-CD project sounds fun to anyone else, let the comments know and we'll make some rules up or something. And don't let your distance get in the way, expatriates. I want to hear a dose of kraut rock straight from its birthplace as well, and we'll work out the details as it goes.
