December 17, 2008

I'll start with the great Big Picture blog from the Boston Globe. Part 1 of their pictures of the year is here. Parts 2 and 3 coming in the next two days.

AV Club Best movies of 2008 - sure the best movies are fine but the real reason to visit is each writer's individual list with categories like "Future Film that Time Forgot", "Most Overrated", and "Best Guilty Pleasure".

Part 2

Admins, feel free to amend my original comment to aggregate the links in one place. Or not.

This picture shows the least scary police officers in history, with their little tiny guns and goofy, knockkneed stance. My message to them: the Segway, not as scary as you think.

Wow, a police force less scary than these guys:

Public Attitudes to An Garda Siochana

The Garda Public Attitudes Survey 2008, showed 81% of the population were satisfied with the Gardai, although 72% believed the service needed improvement, 91% described their local Gardaí as being approachable.

The poll showed 8% of people believed a Garda has acted unacceptably towards them, the rate was highest in Dublin South Central at 14%, lowest in Mayo at 2%. The most common complaint was of Gardai being disrespectful or impolite.[32]

just got back from Ireland. the Garda are nearly absent from view.
i was afraid that driving a stick mounted on the wrong side of the car while driving down the wrong side of the road would lead to multiple tickets if not outright disaster on little line-less roads.
no garda
thankfully, no accidents.

Part 3

Truly one of my favorite lists: Worst Band Names of 2008

I didn't have any problem with the wrong side of the road, though shifting left-handed was bizarre -- but I do remember my mom pointing out that the fast lane wasn't where I thought it was.

They're entitled to make fun of the Ska-pun band name for being outré, but think fondly on the genre that gifted us with "Janitors Against Apartheid", "Let's Go Bowling", "The Cherry Poppin' Daddies", "Mephiskapheles", "Skif Dank", "Less Than Jake", "Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra" and "Save Ferris"

... and this looks like a somethingawful photoshop job:

Yeah, I had exactly one run-in with the Guardai during my driving time in Ireland, and it was when I turned left on red. They were basically just "don't do that again, it's not legal here, you American", and went on their way.

It's what I always imagined that police should be like.

WaPo's IN and OUT list.

Out: Expensive Bicycles. In: Fixies!

Those in/out lists are always so WRONG. sheesh.

luckily when things like fixies make year end mainstream media lists it means the trend is dead.

BTW, been seeing lots of single speed bikes but more and more of them are not fixies but freewheel.
