One chick. One cello. and a computer in real time. Link is to an interesting radiolab episode about Zoe Keating, a cellist who records and loops her cello as she plays live. The cumulative effect is more like an orchestra than a single player. You'll be surprised by the soundscapes she can create.
This was a fixation of many 'indy' bands of the last decade or so - aerial m (most notably), the worldwide, beak, mick turner, sonna, explosions -- could go on. hasn't been used to death, but has been used half to death -- maybe three quarters to death?
Dude, I can't believe I missed Three Quarters to Death this year at Coachella. I heard they played a killer set.

Andrew Bird does this too. It's pretty awesome.
Thomas Dolby (who was once blinded by science, made a mint in ringtones, and is touring again) did a lot of it when I saw him at SxSW '07.
