why is the sky blue?

...so short wavelengths, rather blue light, scatter more than longer, or red. What we see when the sun is high is the scattered light. This also explains why the sunset is red: because we're looking directly at the sun then, and see what isn't scattered.

Rayleigh scattering is dependent on one over the wavelength of the light to the fourth power.
