impeach!

why impeach? Who are the seventeen Republicans plus Lieberman who are going to vote for conviction? If there's no realistic chance of conviction, what's the goal?

The democrats caved on Alito, their last chance to actually stop Bush fundamentally damaging this country. All they can do now is keep on sending him timetables for withdrawal, and force the meme that he's prioritizing his war above the troops.

Bill Simmons figured out a way to link to incendiary political material; he'd never be able to just link to this for the hell of it, but since he's talked about Halberstam a lot, it's fair game:

Donald R. in Boston: As a fan of the late David Halberstam, I thought you would appreciate a link to one of the last pieces he wrote prior to his untimely death. A blistering analysis of the Bush Presidency.
(Note from Simmons: As a former poly sci-major, I LOVED this piece. It almost made me want to break out my old Vietnam books.)

It is in fact well worth checking out.

Thank you for that Halberstam piece, flip:

Therefore, when I hear the president cite history so casually, an alarm goes off. Those who know history best tend to be tempered by it. They rarely refer to it so sweepingly and with such complete confidence. They know that it is the most mischievous of mistresses and that it touts sure things about as regularly as the tip sheets at the local track.

It was just great.
