You can try the ol' Time Warner brand Speed Test to convince yourself there is a problem. You could try speeding silt up with a new DNS server (note to users: the UT login wireless network will not like that you have done this as soku found out).

Bad cables? I guess you're using wireless. Can you try a different laptop or computer somehow to see if it is the connection or the computer's fault? I guess if it works okay in the parking lot...

I once had a dramatic crapification of my connection in my old apartment and I convinced them to come out (they were not happy from their end with the signal dBs and whatnot). Turns out someone had tampered with the box and T'd my cable which leaves enough juice for cable TV but not for the internets. They fixed it by removing the T and I never had a problem again.

Pull up a cmd prompt and do "tracert www.google.com". If the trace gets a couple of hops in before things get janky, then the problem is upstream in Time Warner's network.

Our internet is super slow when it's hot during the summer. We used to have a splitter downstairs that routed the cable upstairs along the outside wall. That cable got sun most of the day and our internet never worked upstairs when it was really hot (by CA standards) during the summer (cable tv was fine downstairs). We had a couple of cable repairmen come out to check out the problem and the second guy suggested that we get a wireless router to avoid the hot cable issues. That mostly solved our problem. Sometimes when it's really hot the internet will still be fussy.

So the tracert looks like:

That looks kinda sucky. I couldn't connect to the TimeWarner Speed Test site -- firefox timed out. Everything was working fine on Monday and previous, so this is something totally new.

Are there any other things that I can test? Or any magic words I to tell the phone support people? I'm really looking forward to another 90 minute hold time.

I think they need to reset/replace your modem. I assume you've tried power cycling the modem to force it to retrain?

You could borrow another modem from a neighbor or Alkaline Earthling to prove this theory by the way.

Yeah, I've reset the modem several times. Then I can load like one web page before it quits. Anyone have a spare modem I can borrow?

So the Time Warner phone support guy said that I'm getting 50% packet loss, and my options are either to swap the modem or have a tech come out and do some tests. He recommended the tech visit. I think I'll swap the modem b/c that involves me not sitting around waiting.

Bouldin Creek has nice free wireless, and is open until midnight.

The Honey Lemonade is really really good.

OMGBBQ314159!! It's LARS! Lars hangs out at Bouldin Creek Coffee House! Whoa. There he is. OMG Lars drinks Negro Modelo! And reads books. And has an iPod! OMG. Austin is so weird. I can't believe I live here.

FYI, Lars was blown up on Schlitz tonight in honor of Mitchell (he claimed to be on his seventh). He was hoping that if people "ordered the shit out of some Schlitz" that the Alamo would consider putting it back on the menu. I can attest that there were some fairly drunken souls walking out of the theater tonight.

Oh, My My My My Mitchell!. I highly recommend watching the original and then the MST3k version which I will be re-watching ASAP.

I want to basically be Joe Don Baker at some point later in my life just for the clothes, the scowl, the vague misanthropy and the inexplicable sexual magnetism.

Yeah, I remember the MST3K version. Lots of laughs. It was one they should yearly for the Turkey Day marathon...
