Mad Props to Todd... for having his cartoons printed in APS news.
At the public lecture in Dallas by Lisa Randall (see "Crowd Packs the Hall for Lisa Randall Public Lecture" ) survey cards were distributed to find out who the members of audience were and how they heard of the event. The attendees were about a third physicists from the meeting, a third students, and a third other members of the public. The students had mainly heard about the lecture from their teachers (APS Outreach, working with event host Victoria Smith Downing of the Kilby Foundation, had canvassed many local schools), and the public through flyers and other means including the radio. One of the cards, however, was returned with a series of drawings on the back making visual fun of the word "brane." Although the author had not signed his name, the APS crack forensic team determined that it was the work of Todd Tinsley of Rice University, who, when his identity was revealed, graciously allowed us to reproduce some of it for the enjoyment of readers of APS News.

I remember sitting next to him during a particularly boring and dense wednesday colloquium about branes years ago. It's like passing notes in elementary school.
Dear Todd,
Among the many survey forms we collected at Lisa Randall's public lecture on Monday was one from "Murray Gell-Mann", who, I have on good authority, was not at the meeting. Our crack team of forensic investigators has uncovered evidence that the real culprit was Todd Tinsley. If that is indeed the case, I'm writing because, on the back of the survey form we found a series of humorous visual takes on the subject of "branes".
They're very good. We'd like to reproduce some or all of them in APS News.

Dear Alan,
Busted! I must say that I'm a little embarrassed that Alan Chodos contacted me . . . over my doodles in Prof. Randall's lecture! I knew I should have been more diligent when marking out my name.
That being said, thank you for your e-mail. It would be an honor to have them included in APS News. Just please do not put the *exceptionally* bad ones in there. (I recall one about "raisin-brane" . . . ughh.)
So much for that!

Good job. I guess we can all learn a great lesson from a Wiess Instructor in Physics and Astronomy.
They were funny and what a great thing to be called out on. Why were you in dallas anyway?
